A Not So Ordinary Morning Starting At 9am

This morning I was summoned to do for a living. The call time was very early. It was not an hour that any red blooded musician that I know would have willingly agreed to show up for unless there was a great reason to for sure. On this day, with so many things happening around me to distract me from staying calm and cool, I made the best of it and was so humbled to be one of the chosen few to record this session. The studio was filled with people that I respected and adored for sure. This is not an everyday occurrence.

For anyone that is reading this that has never recorded a song in a professional studio, its very humbling to say the very least. The process involves amplifying your voice so that you can hear each and every morsel of it, and then you record it. Its maximum exposure and it can be very nerve-racking. Anything that we can see or experience up close and in great detail is sure to give us pause, be it good or bad. Then to top it off, there were 5 different vocalists. We all sang together and created a sound that could be mistaken for a full gospel choir.

At one point in the almost 3 hour session, we were asked to improvise for the entire length of the sound. In this moment each person got the liberty to create in any way possible to them. There were no specific noted to sing. You needed to just let it flow in your own way. I was excited to give it a go and then my turn came up. I was so ready to do it and then a rush of ideas came into my head. I went third or so, which meant that I had the luxury of hearing the others go before me. Honestly, I wanted to go first, however, it all worked out just the way that it should have in the end. My goodness, the individual sounds that came out of each person were just amazing. Music can be interpreted in so many ways. I am blessed to be in this moment and get to do what I love for a living.

Many things went through my head at this session. Firstly, some things or things that I did in the past are what got me in this studio. Secondly, the people that I sang with today were just as nice and professional as they could be. I have sung with each one of them at one time or another over the past 5 or 6 years. Thirdly, I am getting closer and closer to my goal of doing more sessions consistently as well as buying my own home that will have its own studio below it.  This ,will help others to record their projects as well. Fifth, the producer , who is also my friend, put this together trusting my abilities. This is a huge compliment to me that I do not take lightly.

While many others were going somewhere that they absolutely loathe to the tenth power, I was being paid to do what I love more than anything. Some people were just getting out of the bed as I finished today. There were probably others that realized that they didn't have a reason to get up out of bed as well. What ever the case may be, I am grateful and I am feeling powerful as the year begins to wind down. We enhanced a music project for a woman that was not even in the room. With the magic of technology, all of this can be sent to her and she will never have to see us live.

This was a great day and I am so thankful for it. Nothing about today was normal. Yet, everything about it was real. Thank you for being here. It matters so very much to me.
